Tie dye is fun to wear and even more fun to make! You can leave your shirt as is once it’s been tie dyed, or you can take it a step further and add your own wording over the top. Maybe you have your own logo or brand, or a fun name your squad goes by or your favorite word the options are endless!

Can you tie dye a golf shirt?

Can any shirt be tie dyed?

Not just any shirt will do. However, some lightly colored shirts can work well for more unique look, but do keep it mind how the dye will appear against the background. Anything too dark will more or less be pointless. We also recommend using 100% cotton t-shirts over any other fabrics.

How do you tie dye without squirting bottles?

Close one hand around the point of the tee-pee and tie it off with a rubber band; then add rubber bands down the length of it. Stripes: Fold shirt vertically or diagonally, like an accordion or fan, in 2” to 3” wide folds. Then wrap with rubber bands every 2” to 3” or as desired.

Do you mix tie dye with hot or cold water?

A key to clear, brilliant tie-dyes is the rinse and washout procedure – don’t skimp! Hot water is always best for the final washout! Delicate items like rayon are better hand washed or should go into a mesh bag on a gentle cycle so the agitation doesn’t shred them.

Can you tie dye polyester?

Polyester does not tie-dye as easily as natural fabrics such as cotton knit. You can’t easily use sharpies and rubbing alcohol to spread fun tie-dye patterns over polyester material as you can with cotton. You can tie-dye even 100% polyester fabric if you follow these steps: First, prewash the item you want to tie-dye.

Can you tie-dye a black shirt?

Black shirts can’t be tie-dyed in the traditional way. That means that you can’t tie-dye them into a rainbow of colors or even a single color. However, you can use a technique known as reverse tie-dye or bleach tie-dye. With bleach tie-dye, you won’t be adding color.

What dye do I use for tie dying?

Though you can use a variety of dyes to do tie-dye, our recommended and most popular is the Dharma Fiber Reactive Procion type Dye for all cotton, rayon, hemp and other plant fibers.

Do you tie-dye wet or dry?

We generally recommend washing your fabric and leaving it damp before tie-dyeing, as the dye has an easier time saturating the fabric when it’s wet. But depending on the technique and the look you want, you can apply dye to dry fabric. Just make sure the fabric has been washed (if it’s new) to remove the sizing.

Does tie-dye ruin grass?

When tie-dying with students, I recommend using a fiber reactive dye like Procion dye or even a tie-dye kit found at a craft supply store. If you are mixing urea into your dye and applying the dye outside, do not let the dye run into the grass. The urea mixed into the dye will kill the grass.
