What is the difference between a time trial and road bike?
A time trial bicycle is a racing bicycle designed for use in an individual race against the clock. Compared to a road bike, a time trial bike is more aerodynamic, has a shorter wheelbase, and puts the rider closer to the front of the bicycle. It may have either solid disc or spoked wheels.
Is a time trial bike worth it?
When comparing the average and normalised power of both athletes we can definitively say we have an answer to our question – forgoing a severe lack of bike skills or huge gusting winds, yes it is worth riding a TT bike in a non-draft race and although we at JT Multisport specialise in finding every free watt possible …
Why are time trial bikes heavier than road bikes?
Heavier. A time trial bike is typically 1-2kg heavier than a road bike. This is because the main focus is making a time trial bike more aerodynamic rather than lightweight. TT frames tend to be heavier because of bigger ‘aerofoils’ and bigger frames.

How fast do time trial cyclists go?
A good target for a fit club cyclist is to break 24 minutes on a standard quiet course. This requires an average speed of 25 mph. To win an open event, depending on the course, the most common time is something between 20.00 and 21.00. A big target is to break 20 minutes (average speed of over 30 mph).
Are TT bikes really faster?
A tri or TT bike is noticeably faster than a road bike once your average or effective speed (your pace + wind speed) gets above about 20mph. There are 2 reasons why a tri/TT bike is faster: #1 aerobars, #2 aero wheels. Roadbikes can use aero wheels.
How much faster do tri bars make you?
After installing aero bars, riders typically find that they’re going 1 to 2 mph faster at the same level of effort.
How much faster will a tri bike make me?
In general you will see a 1.5 mph – 2 mph boost in speed between a TT and a road bike… assuming the rider is using regular shorts, jersey and helmet along with no aero wheels. Most of that is due to the differing rider position (i.e. more aero).
Why are tri bikes heavier?
A triathlon bike is heavier than a road bike by 2- 4 lbs or 1 to 2 kg. The reason is that the aim is to make a triathlon bike more aerodynamic rather than lightweight as it is in road bikes. The triathlon bikes come with bigger aerofoils and bigger frames than the road bike.

Are time trials faster than road bikes on hill climbs?
But, there are even hill climbs where a time trial bike is quicker than a road bike. If the gradient is 4% or less, the aero benefits can outweigh the weight saving. If there is a headwind up the climb, the benefit of an aero bike is even more pronounced.
What are the unaerodynamic elements of a time trial bike frame?
The most prominent unaerodynamic element is the rider. The actual advantage of going to a time trial bike frame from a road bike frame from an aero point of view is quite small aside from the rider’s position.
How fast can you time a 25 mile time trial?
The current 25 mile time trial record is 45-46, set by Michael Hutchinson in 2012. (32.5mph / 52.7 km/h) – nearly 4km/h faster Alf Engers in TT mode. The main benefit of a modern TT set up would have been moving his arms out of the wind-flow.
