Does a vent stack have to be vertical?
Tips for Installing Vent Pipes Vent pipes must be installed so they stay dry. This means that they should emerge from the top of the drainpipe, either straight vertically or at no less than a 45-degree angle from horizontal, so that water cannot back up into them.
Can a vent stack be horizontal?
To answer your specific question, yes, vent pipes can have horizontal runs, as long as there is no possibility of them becoming plugged with water. In other words, any water that gets into the vent pipe opening must be able to run freely all the way to the sewer, without creating a “trap”.
Can you offset a vent stack?
For this system to function effectively there cannot be any offsets in the waste stack portion. Once the highest branch interval is connected to the stack, the vent portion may contain offsets, provided such offsets are at least 6 inches above the branch interval connection.
What is the minimum horizontal height for venting?
Gas vents that are over 12 inches (305 mm) in size or are located less than 8 feet (2438 mm) from a vertical wall or similar obstruction, shall terminate not less than 2 feet (610 mm) above the highest point where they pass through the roof and not less than 2 feet (610 mm) above a portion of a building within 10 feet …
How long can a horizontal vent pipe be?
The vent horizontal could be 1/3 the vertical. So if you had 24 feet of vertical, your horizontal could be 8 feet. If you go up a pipe size, there is no limit.
What is the difference between a vent stack and a stack vent?
A vent stack is a vertical pipe that is only used for venting, and runs upward from the drain piping to the open air outside the home. Vent stacks are primary vents and accept connections from other vents in a plumbing system. A stack vent is used for both drainage and venting.
Can a main stack vent be offset below the floor level?
The question is, can the 4′ offset shown be done w/ the main stack vent at the floor level (below the flood level of fixtures upstream)–but note that the fixtures of course are vented/revented themselves. The vent COULD be flooded if the vertical pipe were obstructed, therefore the vent should NOT be offset below the 42″ level.
When do you not need a vertical offset?
Where a vertical offset occurs in a soil or waste stack below the lowest horizontal branch, a change in diameter of the stack because of the offset shall not be required.
How tall does a vent need to be to have a horizontal offset?
I am aware of the restrictions for horizontal offsets of vents to be 6″ above the flood level rim of all fixtures serviced by them.
Where do you vent an offset in water piping?
If a horizontal branch connects to the stack within 2 feet (610 mm) above or below a vertical stack offset, and the offset is located more than four branch intervals below the top of the stack, the offset shall be vented in accordance with Section 906.

How big of a stack do you need for a vent?
A secondary stack, perhaps 2 or 3 inches in diameter, serves a branch of the system. Branch drainpipes of smaller diameter (typically 1-1/2 or 2 inches) carry water from specific fixtures to a stack. A true vent is a vertical pipe attached to a drain line that travels through the roof with no water running through it.
Where does the waste stack vent go in a house?
The waste stack in my remodel had to be positioned such that above the floor-level of the 2nd floor (2-story single family home) the stack’s vent cannot continue straight upwards but must go horiztonal around 3-4ft before continuing upwards. There are two bathrooms on the 2nd floor.
