How do you diagnose a bad foot valve?
If you determined the leak is in the well you have a leak in either the well pipe or a bad check valve. Either way, you should check both by pulling the pump out and pressure testing the separate sections of the pipe and the check valve.
How do you pull up a well pipe?
How Do I Pull a PVC Deep Well Pipe?
- Shut off the well pump switch at the control box.
- Disconnect the pump inlet connection to the well pipe with a pipe wrench, for a nut cap design.
- Lift up on the pipe hand over hand until you reach a connection joint, or have 15 to 20 feet of pipe exposed.
When would you use a foot valve?
Use foot valves when you have situations that need a pump, such as when water needs to be extracted from an underground well. Foot valves keep the pump primed, allowing water to flow in, but not letting it flow back out, making them ideal for use in pools, ponds, and wells.
Can you pull a well casing?
Drillers may manually pull very shallow well casings from the ground without the use of a drill rig. Pressure grout the empty borehole after removing the well casing to protect the underlying groundwater aquifer.
How long does a sand point well last?
Submersible pumps, which are located in the well last 8 to 10 years before they need to be replaced, however, many well pumps that service homes with moderate water usage can last up to 15 years.
Can a foot valve get stuck closed?
You might see the pressure gauge jump, but it will usually drop back off fairly quickly. You could have a stuck footvalve, a plugged nozzle, or an internal pump problem that could lead to the scenarios that you seem to be describing.
Where do you install a foot check valve?
D. Install foot check valve vertically with arrow pointed up in direction of liquid flow. The foot valve shall be installed a maximum of 25 feet vertical distance below the suction pipe of the pump inlet. The foot valve screen shall not be supported at the bottom of tank or well for best operation efficiencies.
How do you check a foot valve in a submersible well?
Pull the pipe up out of the well a couple of feet using your winch and clamp your 2x4s onto the pipe to prevent it from falling back into the well. Verify that the clamp is holding the pipe by lowering the winch slightly. If it is holding, remove the flange from the top of the pipe and attach your termination plug and pressure gauge.
How can I tell if my foot valve is holding?
Verify that the clamp is holding the pipe by lowering the winch slightly. If it is holding, remove the flange from the top of the pipe and attach your termination plug and pressure gauge. Pressurize the well pipe by turning the breaker to the well back on. It should hold the pressure for longer than an hour without cycling.
Where is the foot valve on a well pump?
First, consider the placement of the foot valve. It is installed at the pick-up end of the piping (the end that is in the well, through which the water is extracted). It’s located near the bottom of the well. When the pump is operating, there is suction created that sucks the water up through the pipe.

This article series describes the foot valve used on well piping for water well Pumps & Water Wells: we explain what a foot valve is, how they work, why they are used, and how to diagnose troubles with this special in-well check valve found at the bottom of well piping in some wells.
