RPM [Revenue Per Thousand]

RPM definition

RPM stands for sales per thousand (M is the Roman numeral for 1000). This is the amount a publisher pays per thousand of something (such as impressions or pages).

It actually stands for CPM. In fact, most people use CPM to talk about buying or selling ads. However, if you sell ads, you will be paid per thousand impressions, not per thousand impressions.

RPM and CPM are not really the same, but RPM is almost always lower. The difference between them is in all the costs associated with delivering ads. These costs include things like fees paid to agencies and services, as well as royalties from ad networks.

Therefore, the CPM a website earns from displaying ads is almost always lower than the CPM the advertiser pays. In the case of media advertising, it should be even 50% less.

Remark. Since CPM is generally considered a mirror image of CPM, it is almost always used as an abbreviation for representing CPM revenue (since CPM stands for cost per million ad impressions). However, this doesn't necessarily mean thousands of things, and could just as easily mean the RPM of a page.

Technical information

RPM is primarily used as a measure of ad revenue rather than the actual selling price of an ad. This means that instead of a website, the advertiser is told

We sell ad space per impression for £2 per minute.

In fact, it is often the case that a website sells advertising space based on many different pricing models (eg, CPC, CPM, etc.). They then convert it to RPM for their own optimization purposes (ie to see which ads are actually paying the most for space).

Technically, this means that an eRPM or efficient RPM (eg eCPM) is usually used, but the term is almost never used.

It should also be noted that while CPM is negotiated at the start of a deal, the RPM usually doesn't end until the campaign is over. In fact, many uncertain factors can affect sales and alter your final CPM.

These factors include things like click fraud or corporate failure. Either way, the earnings may change significantly and the site will earn less even if the original CPM remains the same.

Average staff turnover

Average speed statistics are not available because the term is underused. However, the average CPM in 2015 was about $3 (about £2). This means that £1.6 (about $1.50 to $10) is probably a reasonable range for display ads. This in turn means that a good average RPM estimate would be between $0.75 and $5.
