What vehicles are tachographs exempt?

The following vehicles are the only vehicles that are exempt from the LCV tachograph rules:

  • Vehicles which cannot exceed 40km/h.
  • Emergency service and armed forces vehicles.
  • Breakdown recovery vehicles that are within 100km of their base.
  • Vehicles which are being road tested for any maintenance or repair work.

What are the rules for tachographs?

Each week, a driver must be given a rest of at least 45 (regular weekly rest) or 24 hours (reduced weekly rest). This must begin no later than the end of 6 consecutive 24-hour days from the end of that driver’s last weekly rest. In any 2-week period, a driver must get at least one 45 hour rest and one 24 hour rest.
